Summer Skin Protection Article

I recently read a super helpful article about the do's and don'ts of sun protection. Of all my friends, I'm definitely "the mom" who always has her floppy hat and UPF50 shirt but some of the facts in the article even surprised me! After how popular my previous sun protection post was, I wanted to share the article and the main take away points (below!)!

Take Away Points:

Up to 90% of skin aging is caused by the sun - Say WHAT now?! Let me get pen and paper and write these tips down because I do NOT want to be wrinkly (Canadian Dermatology Association).

Use "broad spectrum" sunscreen - It protects against UVA and UVB rays, you need protection against both!

1 coat of lotion sunscreen = 2 coats of spray sunscreen - 1 shot glass is enough to cover your entire body if you're using lotion sunscreens. If you're using sprays or sticks, you need 2 coats to be completely covered and protected!

My neck, my back (of the legs), my lips, and my ears - The most commonly missed spots are the most common places for cancer to pop up, so don't forget to apply to yours ears, lips, back of the neck, and the back of the legs!

Apply 30 minutes BEFORE going outside - Most sunscreen needs to be applied 30 minutes before you go into the sun because it takes that long for the ingredients to start protecting your skin! I was definitely not aware of this rule!

Hope these help! If you have more tips, I'd love to read them in a comment below!

Love Yourself

The past few weeks I've had a lot of discussions with friends, family, and in my bible study about the importance of your relationship with yourself. One of the biggest life lessons I've learned is that YOU are the only person in life that you can always 110% rely on. Not only that but you spend more time with yourself than any body else, so accordingly, you hear your own voice more than any other voice in the world. Isn't that crazy?! I never thought about it that way.

With that said, most people's internal voice is very critical and negative. How many times a day do you think to yourself "why did I do that?" or "I should have done better on x, y, z"? If you can't give yourself a pep talk and believe in yourself, then no one else will! It's really hard to combat those critical internal voices but if you can wake up and look in the mirror and say "Hey! YOU are awesome! I believe in you! You can, and WILL succeed! You are doing your best and that IS enough!", how can you have a bad day? It sounds silly, but it really does work because eventually you will outnumber and overpower all those negative thoughts!

This may seem like a silly connection, but this Meghan Trainor song really strikes a cord with me, especially when she says "I can't help loving myself". You deserve it, so love yourself! Wherever you are in life, make a conscious effort to love YOU because you are amazing, perfect, and worthy of love! If you aren't going to love and believe in yourself, who will?

If you want more resources on the topic, I'd highly recommend the Relatable study by Louie Giglio

GoodRx

I was in clinic the other day and ended up using this website for a lot of our patients because they wanted to know how much their prescriptions would cost. We were able to tell them the exact cost at different pharmacies, plus we were able to find them coupons! I definitely thought this was common knowledge but I was surprised when so few people knew about it, so I wanted to spread the word for anyone who buys medicine (aka almost everyone at some point!), as well as all the practicing clinicians out there.

GoodRX

GoodRx is an amazing company that was made just to help patients find the best prices for the drugs you need, by giving you the prices at all the pharmacies in your city. It also gives you COUPONS (hello!) for most drugs! Even better, you can sign up for a prescription discount card that you can use for up to 80% off! They even have mobile apps (alternatively you can find the same information by going to Goodrx.com on your phone)! Read more about GoodRx here!

It's super helpful for when you're in clinic and your patient asks how much their drugs will cost AND helps them find where they can get the best price, whether they are insured or not! I would highly recommend it! Thanks to my sweet dad for keeping me up to date with technology and telling me about GoodRx a while back!

Do you have any helpful medical resources or apps you like to use?

Back to (Medical) School Essentials

School is starting soon, especially medical schools that start back in July! I wanted to do a post about some of things I found helpful for the classroom years of med school, most of which are also totally applicable for undergrad, grad school, really any type of school!

Back to (Medical) School Essentials

Bose Noise Canceling Headphones - If you buy one thing to improve your studying, it should be this! They're pretty pricey but almost everyone in my class had a pair of these! When it's the night before your exam and people are chatting nearby and your stress level is higher than normal, you can just click the "noise canceling" switch and boom you're in your happy place. Trust me, you'll thank me later :)

Colorful pens (& highlighters) - Colorful pens and highlighters make studying so much more fun and  happy! When you're studying 12 hours a day, you will really appreciate the little things like that! I absolutely love the Paper Mate Flair pens linked above because they don't bleed through the page. I also love these Pilot Ink Gel pens because they are so smooth and ink-y to write with! For highlighters I love these (remember this post when I first got them?!) and these!

Book Stand - I have the 16.5x10.4 and it's perfect for holding up big text books when you're tired of craning your neck! A lot of my classmates ended up getting the same one and really liked it too!

Cheap Scrubs - You'll spend A LOT of time up in anatomy lab and you'll need scrubs for lab. Get a pair or 2 that are cheap so you can throw them away after the semester is over! Trust me, you (and your future patients and colleagues) won't want to keep them! Matching scrubs bottoms here. You can also check Goodwill for even cheaper prices!

White Board - White boards are super helpful if you're writing out a pathway or trying to map out a complex idea. I used mine all the time and almost all my classmates had one at their desk! Be sure to get some colorful white board markers too!

Silent Mouse - When you spend the majority of your time either taking notes on your computer in class or studying from your computer, it gets frustrating to always use the laptop track pad. Getting a mouse definitely made my wrists hurt less! I highly recommend a wireless mouse that's silent so that you won't hear all the clicking sounds!

Littman Cardiology Stethoscope III - Most schools recommend this stethoscope. Check with your school to see what they recommend and if they have discounts! If not, the Student Medical Shop usually has good deals!

Keyboard Arm Rest - Again, spending most of the day on the computer is not the most ergonomic thing for your wrists! One of my friends had this arm rest and after using it a few times, I was hooked and got one for myself. It really does reduce nerve pain from resting your arm on one side for too long! I found it on sale here! I'm obsessed with my arm rest but if you don't get wrist pain from typing for 12 hours (#jealous) then you definitely should not spend money on this!!

July Favorites

I haven't done a monthly favorites in a hot minute and wanted to do one because this month I discovered a few awesome things!

July Favorites: Hobby Lobby Home Decor

1. Hobby Lobby - If you saw my post on Instagram, you know I recently discovered Hobby Lobby. It has everything related to home decor -- think Michael, Home Goods, and Pier 1 had a beautiful baby. It took a lot of self restraint to not buy everything in the store! Plus they have amazing coupons and sales!

2. Hamilton - I LOVE musicals. They are totally my jam: Kinky Boots, Hairspray, Lion King, Rent, Newsies, Legally Blonde the Musical, Guys and Dolls, West Side Story, Wicked, Avenue Q, Evita, Bye Bye Birdie (anybody else love musicals?! If so, you'll appreciate this). Fittingly, I've been enjoying the Hamilton soundtrack for a few months now. Every song is so fun and catchy! Last weekend I had a loooong day of driving and listened to the Hamilton soundtrack (you don't want to know how many times) and now I'm even more hooked. I've become one of these people.

July Favorites: The Pool

3. The Pool - It's been such nice weather for going to the pool. Even if it's just for a few minutes in the evening, it's so nice to just relax outside by the water! Don't forget to stay protected in the sun!

4. Anthropologie Wild Honeysuckle Candle - I kept going into Anthro and smelling this candle but in my head saying "no, you don't NEED another candle". After a crazy day, I treated myself to buying this delicious-smelling candle and my nose was very thankful because it seriously smells amazing!! Not to mention, it's a very cute coffee table addition!

What are your July Favorites? Would love to read them in a comment!

Summer Skin Protection

With summer in full gear I wanted to share some stylish sun protection. Summer days are made for trips to the beach, afternoons at the lake, and cook outs by the pool. With spending so much time outside (#praise), it's important to keep your skin protected from the sun's UVA and UVB rays to prevent skin cancer! Here are a few of my favorites!

6 Tips for Summer Skin Protection

Lands End UPF tops - After doing a bunch of research on the best UPF shirts, Lands End had the best reviews for high quality and cutest styles. I love my new top! It's very cute and breathable so I don't feel like I'm overheating even when it's crazy hot outside. I wore it to the beach and I didn't get burned at all because of the special UPF 50 material! That one is on super sale and there are tons of other cute options here! Also definitely check their size guide and go with your number size (2, 4, 6) rather than your usual shirt size (small, medium, large).

Athleta UPF Cover Up - I've been eyeing this UPF 50 dress all summer and I think it would be the perfect option for throwing on top of your swimsuit at the pool or just wearing around to run errands. This dress is also extra cute and also UPF 50!

Floppy Hat - Large-brimmed hats are perfect for protecting your scalp and your face from the sun! I've also been eyeing this beauty!

Sunscreen - I wear this moisturizer with SPF 30 on my face daily and will reapply if I'm out in the sun. For the rest of my body I love Blue Lizard and the Coppertone Sport spray!

Sunglasses - Check that your sunglasses are UVA/UVB protective because you also want to protect your eyes (and yes, unfortunately eyes can get cancer too)! I was so excited when I bought these! I also love this pair if you're looking for a splurge!

Umbrellas - Umbrellas are the perfect way to be outside while keeping your skin protected! This umbrella is great because you can set it up as a traditional umbrella or have it slanted on the ground so your back is completely protected! This canopy is also perfect for the beach or the pool!

Do you have any other tips for protecting your skin?! I'd love to hear them in a comment!

The Perfect Tote Bags for Work & the Weekend

Tote bags are the best invention ever. A cute alternative to the backpack that's professional and stylish. What more could a working girl want?! In the last few years I've become obessesed with tote bags because they are SO convenient, especially for work. Being able to fit my computer, notes, wallet, daily essentials, water bottle, coffee mug, and lunch into one bag is such a game-changer. I wanted to round up my 3 favorite totes and then some similar options for all the working ladies out there!

The Perfect Totes Bags for Work and the Weekend

1. Black Tumi Q-Tote - This bag is super spacious and has tons of pockets. I love that it's sleek and black so it's super professional for work! It also has a pocket in the back so you can put it on your suitcase handle, which is super handy for traveling! I also love that it zips up so if I'm running out in the rain, I can just zip up my purse and everything is protected! Tumi has super high-quality bags -- this bag has been through T O N S of use is still as good as new. It's currently on sale here, here, here and here!

2. Pink Coach Tote - One fun thing I've discovered from Laura is that diaper bags are major winners. I was looking for a fun and colorful every day tote that would fit all my daily essentials including my laptop and lunch. Most of the regular totes were a tad small for all of this and the diaper bag ended up being perfect! It has SO MANY POCKETS and then 4 extra pockets for bottles which is great for my coffee travel mug and water bottle. This is definitely my favorite because it is so fun and spacious. I seriously get compliments on it most days I wear it!

3. Brown Michael Kors Tote - In my mind this is the quintessential "tote". It's structured, leather, and super stylish. It has a dedicated laptop pocket in the middle which is perfect for storing your tablet or important folders! Also found here and on sale here!

My biggest advice is to get a high-quality brand with durable leather or nylon. If you're using a tote bag daily and stuffing it with things (#guilty), you don't want a bag whose straps are going to break after a few months! I know the initial cost is high, but if you can buy it on sale it's definitely worth splurging a little for a bag that will last for years and years!

Other favorites + sales!!
Kate Spade Tote - Kate Spade has tons of great quality bags in every shape and color. All of these are already on sale AND an extra 30% off with code "SUNSHINE"! One, two, three, four, five.

Tory Burch Tote - Another quintessential tote that has a middle laptop pocket and is very structured. Also love this style for a more laid/unstructured tote! You can get 30% off with code "EXTRA30" on the sale styles like this fun tote!

Madewell Transport Tote - Really great quality leather and also super cute! This one is also super cute and is 20% off with code "META20"!

Dooney and Burke Tote - Dooney and Burke also has tons of styles and so many color choices for each style! These are good classic totes if you don't want something too distracting! One, two, three.

Louis Vuitton Tote - This is definitely a major splurge but talk about a dream bag!!

Morning Glory Healthy Muffins

I love baking! Two of my roommates in college were HUGE bakers and got me into baking. It's so fun to follow a recipe and then have a delicious treat at the end. This recipe is perfect for when you are in the mood for something sweet and tasty but want to be healthy. It has 4 different fruits and veggies in them! If you're feeling extra fancy you can add some chopped almonds on top! They're perfect for breakfast, snack, dessert, you name it! After letting them cool, I kept them in a Tupperware container in the fridge so that they would last all week!

Puppy!!!

Sorry I have been MIA the last few days!! I've been meaning to post a ton of blog posts but since I got my puppy a few days ago, my life has been extremely a little crazy.

Miniature Poodle Puppy

She is soo precious and fun to be around. She LOVES cuddling and she'll fall asleep at my feet whether I'm at my desk or cooking, it's too stinking cute. She's also super good with other dogs and people, which has been a blessing!

Although she is the cutest little thing, having a puppy is a T O N of work! I definitely knew that going into this, but it's not just about taking them out every hour or two. The hard part is teaching them to tell you when they need to go to the bathroom (sometimes it's sooner than every 2 hours!), teaching them to not chew everything in site, and teaching them to be independent so you can leave without them freaking out! If you have any tips on puppy rearing I'm all ears! I read all the puppy books and blogs before getting her, but I'm realizing that book advice isn't as practical as the advice I've gotten from fellow puppy parents!

8 Game-Changing Tips for Moving

8 Game-Changing Tips for Moving

It's that time of year when new residents are moving across the country, fellows are moving to their new hospitals, and undergraduate students are avoiding the thought of going back to school in a a few more weeks! I recently finished a big move and thought I would share some of things I learned along the way so it might help others! Whether you're moving back to school or moving to your first home, I hope these tips can help :)

1. Use boxes - "Well, duh" you're thinking, but this is actually a great strategy. Boxes are easy to stack on top of each other in the back of a car, pick-up truck, or U-Haul. It will make it way easier on yourself to pack things in boxes that are sealed with packing tape, instead of open boxes or crates, where things can shift or slide out.

2. Pack Smart - In between plates use coffee filters and wrap dish towels around mugs. Use t-shirts, towels, or pillowcases for picture frames, glass, and mirrors. In the truck, use softer items to cushion more fragile items. We moved a nice wood table and used my sleeping bag and some soft weekender bags to make sure it didn't hit the side of the truck while driving.

3. Label EVERYTHING - This seems obvious, but labeling where you want the box as well as what is inside the box is extremely helpful! I had boxes and boxes of kitchen supplies but when we just wanted bowls and silverware for breakfast the next day, it was extremely helpful to only have to open one box! Also, marking "FRAGILE" on fragile boxes will remind you, and anyone helping you, to be extra careful with those boxes to ensure nothing breaks!

4. Get help! - Moving is never fun, so if your budget allows it, have movers help you. This is a great resource -- they will give you quotes based on the amount of time/people you need. Even if you don't book the movers through the website (you can call each moving companies directly), you will have an idea about the price ranges in your area. You can also look at yelp.com for your city to find smaller businesses, as well as college student movers. I used a small business from Yelp that didn't have a website or anything, I just called and got an estimate. At first it seemed a little shady, but  since they had good reviews, I went for it. The movers were extremely professional and affordable, even more so than a big company I ended up using to unload my boxes! Don't feel like you need to go with a big name. If you can't use movers, enlist your friends, roommates, significant others, or family! Remember to treat them to a delicious meal/massages afterwards because anyone who helps you move is a saint! A lot of colleges also have move-in teams to help you once you arrive on campus, so check your school's website for that! If you can't get human help, a rolling chair could do the trick (*insert laugh-crying emoji*)

8 Game-Changing Tips for Moving

5. Keep a weekender bag with you - Many people told me to pack an overnight bag with my toiletries, but my genius sister reminded me to pack a bag with toilet paper (GAME CHANGER), soap, towels, PJ's, clothes for the next day, undergarments, toiletries, sheets, and an extra set or 2 of clothes. Once we unloaded everything, returned the U-Haul, bought groceries, ate dinner, and got back to the house, I was not ready to go on a scavenger hunt for all these items. It made the move SO much easier and way less stressful.

6. Make an itinerary - I am overly pretty organized so when it came to the big move, I planned everything. I had a big Word doc with info regarding U-Haul/mover/etc, what times I was meeting the movers, the exact address, their phone numbers, and my reservation number. I also planned out when the U-Haul tank would run out of gas and used GasBuddy.com to find cheap gas stations right near the highway around those mileages. It was super handy because we drove separate cars, so we already had a planned destinations to meet throughout the trip.

8 Game-Changing Tips for Moving

7. Have snacks ready to go - Ain't nobody got time for hanger (hungry + anger, it's a real thing) when you're trying to move!! We each packed trail mix, 3 granola bars, an apple, water, sandwiches, and carrots to keep us fueled throughout the day.

8. Leave early - Try to think about traffic and plan your departure and arrival in order to avoid rush hour traffic. The drive will always take longer than you think because of unexpected traffic, bathroom breaks, gas, and eating, so make sure you leave yourself plenty of time!

Finding Dory + Summer Savings Tips

Oh my goodness Finding Dory was so stinking good! If you're on the fence about going I definitely recommend it! Whether you're going with your favorite little ones, your friends, or for date night, Finding Dory is 100% appropriate for all the above! It's based off the original movie Finding Nemo (aka a C-L-A-S-S-I-C!) but this part of the story is based off Dory's past and how she ended up finding Marlin (and Nemo of course!) in the first place. This movie was seriously all the feels!

Finding Dory + Summer Savings Tips

Speaking of movies, three really awesome summer saving tips when going to the movies:
1. $5 movies on Tuesday nights - Most movie theaters (including Regal, AMC, Cinemark) have $5 movies on Tuesday nights! Check your local theater because this is definitely a steal.
2. Matinees!! - Guys I love matinees. I'm not sure if it's a weird summer tradition for me, but going to the movies when it's still light outside just makes me feel like a little kid! The theater is usually empty and the tickets are 30-40% cheaper than night time showings!
3. Bring a water bottle and eat before - Bringing your own water bottle is a great idea because you can refill it and you don't have to worry about crazy expensive sodas! Plus the price of popcorn at the theater? No thanks! I try to eat a snack right before I go so I'm not hungry and craving all the popcorn and candy!

Have you already seen Finding Dory?! Did you love it!?

Pineapple and Quinoa Summer Salad

This week I wanted something light and healthy after a weekend of eating fries and fried fish sandwiches. A good diet is all about balance right?! I found this amazing recipe but since I didn't have time to whip up some chicken, I changed a few things to make it even quicker! It's super delicious and I will definitely be making it many more times this summer!

Pineapple and Quinoa Summer Salad

Pineapple and Quinoa Summer Salad

Pineapple and Quinoa Summer Salad
Prep and cook time: 15 mins
Servings: 5

Ingredients:
1/2 cup of uncooked quinoa
1 cup of water
1 Knorr chicken cube*
1 pineapple
2 cups of grape tomatoes
4 cups of spring mix
2 cans of sweet corn kernels
1/2 red onion
1 mozzarella ball
4 lemons
2 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
1 tsp garlic powder
1 dash of paprika
1 dash of Trader Joe's 21 spice salute

*You can also substitute the Knorr chicken cube and the cup of water for 1 cup of chicken broth

Directions:
1. Add 1/2 cup of quinoa, cup of water, Knorr chicken cube* and cook on high heat until boiling. Once boiling, cook on medium heat until all the water is absorbed, about 10 minutes.
2. While the quinoa is cooking, cut the pineapple, and dice the red onion and mozzarella.
3. In a bowl, combine the grape tomatoes, spring mix, corn, red onion, and mozzarella.
4. In a small container mix together the olive oil, juice of the lemon, garlic powder, paprika, and 21 spice salute and then add to the salad bowl.
5. Serve with quinoa and pineapple on the side.

Protip: If you want to save the salad for another night, make the dressing and refrigerate it but don't add it until right before eating (whether the same night or a few nights later)!

Bloom Where You Are Planted

This has to be one of my favorite quotes. It really strikes a cord with me because sometimes you're placed in a really bad situation and it seems impossible for things to get better. However, if you only let in the positive and do everything in your power to bloom in that situation, you will do amazing things. This could range from changing career paths, to moving to a completely new place far from family and friends, to the loss of a loved one. Sometimes life doesn't go as planned and maybe that new city is a lot lonelier than you thought, or your new job isn't what you initially hoped for. In those tough times, you have to dig deep within yourself and try to find the positives. Journal if helps to keep track of the positive things, even something as small as seeing a child playing, sitting in the warm sun, or a delicious homemade sandwich for lunch. Keep pushing and growing because after a while things will fall into place: you will find good friends and activities you love in your new city, you will get the swing of things at work and find fulfillment in what you do, and over the course of months your broken heart will be filled with beautiful memories of your loved one and things will slowly start to get back to a new normal. Whatever you're going through, you CAN do this! Do everything you can to bloom where you're planted.

Sending you all the inspiration and good vibes,

Father's Day Gift Guide

With Father's Day just around the corner (June 19th), I thought I would put together a gift guide. When it comes to shopping for your dads, I've learned that the best gifts are practical and/or from the heart. Getting him something that he can use everyday or that will make his day a little easier are extremely appreciated. Here are a few of my picks for useful and great Father's Day gifts! For some of the pricier options, you could split the price with siblings!
Scarves and Sweets Father's Day Gift Guide

Dollar Shave Club | Burberry Watch | L.L.Bean Toiletry Bag | Heart-felt Card | Tumi Wallet
Massage | Fitbit | Godiva Chocolates

Dollar Shave Club - Monthly shipments of nice (free) razors = every dad's dream.

Burberry Watch - Watches are the best present because you use them every day but whenever he looks at his watch he'll think of you! I got a little carried away with the watches, they all looked so cool! This one is a pretty pricey, but this Skagen watch and this Ted Baker watch are similar options!

L.L.Bean Toiletry Bag - Great for the dad who travels a lot for work or for fun! This one is just as nice and half the price!

Heart-felt Card - I am not above a sweet card written from the heart. Every dad loves to hear how much he is appreciated and the impact he's had on your life.

Tumi Wallet - Dad's always carry their wallets in their pocket so they get worn pretty easily. Updating your dad's wallet with this beautiful Tumi one would be a luxurious but very useful gift!

Massage - Massages are a great gift for a dad of any age. Being a parent is stressful (even with grown children!) so help you dad take care of himself by giving him a gift card for a massage. He would never get one on his own, but will immensely appreciate it! You can use Yelp for great local massage studios.

Fitbit - A Fitbit is a fun present your dad can use to track his steps, check his heart rate during workouts, and track progress over time. Definitely a good one for the active dad or a dad who is trying to be more active!

Godiva Chocolates - You just can't go wrong with chocolate! Godiva is having a buy one get one 50% off on their Father's Day boxes through 6/19!

Tips for applying to medical school

This is a post I've been thinking about writing for a while, because it's a question I get frequently from friends, friends-of-friends, and coworkers. I completely forgot how nerve-raking it was to apply to medical school, until recently when someone asked about my specific MCAT study schedule. All the info in this post is based off my personal experiences from my own application and my friends applying around the same time. I hope I can pass along the knowledge I've gained and help someone else along their path to medicine!

College Coursework
1. Complete the prerequisites. Every school is somewhat different so check with the schools you are interested in, but the major ones are general chem 1, general chem 2, organic chem 1, organic chem 2, biology 101, anatomy, physics 1, physics 2, English, and sometimes calculus.
2. Major in something you LIKE! If you hate biology, don't major in it! It's not necessary to be a biology/chemistry major to get into medical school.
3. Challenge yourself. I think it helps your application to have difficult coursework like higher level chemistry and biology courses (beyond the prerequisites). Medical school is extremely difficult and being able to do well in difficult undergrad classes will show that you will likely do well in the difficult med school curriculum.

The MCAT
I can't speak towards studying for the new sections of the MCAT but my main tips are to do practice questions and take full-length practice tests. The main way to study is to just do a zillion practice questions. I wouldn't bother watching or reading review material, instead dive right into the practice questions. Do 10 questions at a time and then check those and make sure you understand the concepts. Each one I missed, I would write down in a notebook the concept and why I missed the question. If I was still confused, I'd quickly review the concept or watch a video online. I also tried to do a full practice test every Saturday. It's definitely doable to study while you are working full time or taking classes, you just need to make it a priority to do X number of practice questions per day (100-200 is plenty because you need time to make sure you understand the ones you're missing!) and at least 5-10 full-length practice tests before the big day. I would only recommend a prep course for those who are a few years out of college because it is a good review, but if you have seen the material recently, then doing practice questions is a better use of your time. As far as resources, these were my favorite:
1. All 5 Examkracker 1001 Books (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5) - Practice questions, practice questions, practice questions.
2. Audio Osmosis - I listened to this every day on my way to and from work and it was super helpful. I'm definitely an auditory learner and I loved the way they had silly ways to remember facts.
3. Full-Length Practice Tests via AAMC and Gold Standard (scroll down) - I would do 10 of these before your real exam day because the average of these will probably be around your real score. What is more important than taking the tests, is giving yourself a few hours to review the test and make sure you really understand the ones you missed.

Where Should I apply?
This is a very personal choice because each school is looking for a particular type of candidate. Some schools focus more on research and want students with lots of research experience. Some schools focus on service and want students with hundreds of hours of volunteer experience. The focus and mission of the school will dictate the type of students accepted. To have the best experience in your 4 years in medical school, try to find schools where your goals and experiences match the school's mission (ie: you don't want to be stuck at a research-based med school with a required research year if you hate research!). You should apply very broadly and no school is out of reach but keep in mind your own strengths. If you are interested in getting an MD/PhD and are heavily focused on research, and that's where most of your previous experiences are, you are not as likely to be a top choice for a service-oriented school, even with excellent GPA/MCAT scores.

Writing the applications
In general, for your primary application I would write a personal statement about WHY you want to go into medicine and then different activities you've done and how they've prepared you to be a good physician. I wouldn't get too fancy and try to write a very attention-catching personal statement like you're encouraged to do for undergraduate college admissions. Keep it simple and sincere! As far as secondary applications, I would write very specific ones for each school. Every school has extremely different missions and tailoring your essays will show the schools you care about their program.
